More Big Island Adventures

Wow, time flies... I swear, the Earth actually used to rotate around the sun slower before Brynn came into our lives.

First thing's first. Happy B-Day Brynn!

She actually doesn't know it was her birthday yet because we were all sick last weekend (well, except Mike), so we are planning to celebrate this weekend, so there are face covered in cake photos yet to come. :)

Wow, we have a 2 year old.

Crazy.

Alright, back to our earlier adventures...

So we went down to the Petroglyph field in Pu'uloa . There are approximately 22,000 petroglyphs carved into the pahoehoe (smooth lava here). We finally had a chance to use the baby carrier we had been hauling all over the place, so we put Brynn into her carrier and walked 10 steps and saw this...

The sign says that due to the levels of sulfur dioxide small children and those with breathing problems should go no further. Well, crap.

I have to say Brynn was none too happy when we took her back out of the carrier and put her back in the car. But mom! This is a great place to get out! Luckily, this was not one of the things Oma was too interested in seeing, so she hung out with Brynn and played in the car and watched a kids movie while Mike and I jogged the mile through the lava fields to the site.

It was definitely worth it, the sheer number of petroglyphs is impressive. They had this explanation of what they represent (hopefully you can read it).

Essentially it says that this was a place they would come to bury the umbilical cords of newborns to bring health, prosperity and long life, in addition to tying them to their ancestral lands.

Very cool.

More to come.

Very cool. We buried Griffin's cord under the Oak, but I love the idea of taking it to a place where all his ancestors' were placed, too. Happy Birthday, Brynn!!!
P.S. We are very intrigued by Pirate coats. He's in about 12 month clothing for the most part (12-18 for sleepers, since he's so long.)
